C56
This is a small-size locomotive for passenger and freight trains, and
164 were built from 1935 to 1942. The popular C56 was nicknamed "Pony" for
its light, nimble appearance. The C56 was designed so that
it could also be operated backwards for use on small lines that had no turntables,
and features a unique style of the tender car for drivers'visibility. The
locomotive at the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum ran in Hokkaido and the
Chugoku region.
The C56 now pulls the "SL Kita Biwako" train between Maibara
and Kinomoto on the Hokuriku Main Line. The "SL Kita Biwako" makes special
runs in the spring, autumn and winter.
